Travel Diary: Dubai

Dubai is the city that I called home for most of my childhood. It's a weird city that attracts you with its biggest/tallest/fastest/shiniest complex, but you can't help but be in awe of how it has become such an amazing place over such a short period of time. Though most people don't think about the icky side of Dubai like the abuse of the workers who actually build everything, the amount of fakeness all around, and the constant number of people who keep leaving because it can never actually be someone's home. Without getting into too much detail, I'm going to leave it as it's weird. Those factors aside, I had an awesome time growing up in Dubai. There's a billion and one things to do for children, but the best part is that you're constantly exposed to new cultures and people so you get to learn to be accepting of others, and quick to adapt. I left Dubai and moved to Lebanon almost ten years ago, and only went back once in those ten years (in 2007). It hit me that it's been SEVEN years since I got to see Dubai. I thought it was time to go back and take a trip down memory lane and visit some old friends. I find it a bit weird though that most of the people I know that live in Dubai now didn't live there when I was there, I actually met them in university in Lebanon and they only moved there recently. Dubai is "the land of opportunity" and "the place to be" for them; it's not associated with a childhood memory of running around Mamzar park, ice skating at the Hyatt Regency ice rink, or eating hot dogs at the IKEA in Deira City Center (before it apparently moved to Festival City?). Anyway, seven years later I finally went back for a visit. To sum up my trip in one word, if it's even considered word, WOW. When I say WOW, I mean the good kind and the bad kind at the same time. Things have seriously changed, but at the same time everything is still the same. Life pretty much revolves around shopping and eating (and work if you have a job). I basically went from one mall to another, and I walked so much in said malls that I ended up getting a blister on the bottom of my foot. Ouch. Since it was a pretty short trip I didn't get to do everything I wanted to do, but I guess that just means I'll have to go back again some other time... oh well. In the mean time, I'm going to relive my mini-cation with some pictures and a vlog.
