Let's Talk About: MASCARA

Pouch: Pieces

Mascara, mascara, mascara. My first makeup love. A magical invention that has the ability to transform even your most horrible face day to a pretty one. Apply a couple of coats and voila! Over the years, I've tried out a shit ton of mascara so I thought it would be fun to share my collection (of non-crazy colored mascara) with you along with my a mini review, and some tips on how to make them last longer and how to clean them.

- EXPIRY DATE: Don't keep open mascaras for over 6 months (although some people say 3 months, I like to let some mascaras dry out a bit).

- SANITATION: Use makeup remover/antibacterial wipes once in a while to wipe the wand and package to keep it clean. This product is being applied right next to your eyeball, and sometimes even inside when your hand accidentally slips... you need to keep it clean! Keeping it clean also gives you less clumpy lashes since there's no dried up excess around the end of the bottle or on the wand.

-VALUE FOR MONEY: Just because a mascara is by a designer brand, it does NOT mean it's better than others. Most designer makeup brands are owned by the same companies that have a drugstore brand as well. YSL is to L'Oreal (a.k. Maybelline), as Chanel is to Bourjois. Yes, Lancome Hypnose is an amazing mascara... but Maybelline can be even better (at a quarter of the price!).

My collection with a mini review...

Lancome Hypnose "Doll Eyes": the shape of this mascara is similar to the L'Oreal Miss Manga... not a big fan. This mascara also had a very odd smell to it. As a product, it's not that bad. It does its job, but I didn't really see the "doll eyes" effect. Would not repurchase this version of the Hypnose, but I'm open to trying out the other ones in the collection!

Lancome Cils Design Pro-Custom Design Double Mascara: probably my favorite double ended mascara. The fine ended brush really gets those little fine lashes!

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lash Extending Treatment Mascara:  This product claims to "protect and nourish" your lashes... not sure if it does actually do that. I didn't feel my lashes getting healthier or anything. With that said, it's not a bad mascara. It's not super volumizing or lengthening but it's pretty decent for everyday use although the super long wand gets annoying. Ps. This is my mom's favorite mascara.

Benefit BAD gal Lash: When it comes to Benefit mascaras all anyone talks about is the "They're Real" (which is a pretty good mascara that has amazing staying power). The Bad Gal Lash is a pretty decent mascara with a super fat brush by Benefit that existed before the They're Real. It's not a mascara that I would particularly purchase, but I wouldn't mind its presence if I were to get a Benefit box set.

L'Oreal's Voluminous Original mascara is a classic like the Chanel handbag. If you're not a fussy makeup person then this is the mascara for you. Fool proof, decent length, decent volume, not clumping...

L'Oreal Miss Manga... where do I begin. I don't think I've ever been disappointed by a mascara this much before. The wand SO flimsy and wiggly that I can get a proper grip on the lashes. I had half a heart to not include this review, but I thought I'd share my opinion... even if it wasn't a good one.

Maybelline "The Falsies - Big Eyes "This is currently not available in Lebanon for some reason, I got this last summer when I was in Texas because I kept seeing the commercial everywhere and I'm a sucker for mascara commercials. Even though I love the Falsies collection by Maybelline and blame my love of mascara on the collection, this particular one was pretty disappointing. This mascara comes with two ends one for top lashes and one for lower. I can honestly say that I only use this for the bottom lash wand because it's super fine. The top lash brush is pretty blah.

Maybelline "The Rocket- Volume Express" A much raved about product that I was super excited to try out. It wasn't available in Lebanon just yet but I spotted it at the Duty Free last summer on my way to Prague. I ended up picking up four- for my mom, aunt, and Maya. At first I hated it beyond hate and completely did not understand what everyone loved about this mascara. Couple of months down the line though, I kinda really love it! It has dried out which makes it easier to use, and the plastic bristles coat all the lashes perfectly!

Maybelline "The Colossal Volum' Express- Smokey Eyes": Probably my least favorite out of the colossal line. It's not a bad mascara, but there's nothing special about it that would make me want to repurchase it.

Maybelline "The Colossal- Go Extreme": I loved this Go Extreme Volum' mascara from the first second that I used it. The want is perfection, the brush is perfection, the application is perfection. IT IS PERFECTION. It makes your lashes so voluminous and shmexy! The only down side to it though is that it started drying out a little too fast (granted that I was using it everyday) and once it got a little dry it wasn't as perfect as it was wet (which is weird because I usually like drier formulas).

Maybelline "The Colossal Volum Express- Waterproof": This is probably the only waterproof mascara I own since I removing waterproof mascara is a pain. The Mayblelline Colossal Volum Express Waterproof is my go to mascara for beach/pool days, I sometimes ever wear it to the gym on days when I feel like I look like a little too much like crap. Would repurchase!

TIPS:
  • Use an eyelash curler BEFORE you apply mascara. (or make sure the mascara is completely dry if you want to curl them after)
  • Wiggle your wand to coat your lashes properly from the base to the tips.
  • Layer mascara for va-va-voom lashes!
  • Don't forget to apply mascara on the bottom lashes, it will complete the look.
  • Clean off an old mascara wand and use it as a spoolie for eyebrows and lash brushing.

  2. Ok so here's the thing. I usually use a lot of L'oreal mascaras and I was always happy with them. Until I tried the Lancome Hypnose sample size mascara (not doll eyes, just the regular one). Aline, I don't think i've ever fallen in love with a mascara. It kept my lashes SO soft. It was so lightweight and the perfume of it was lovely. Then when i went back to my L'oreal one, i felt the disappointment.

So now I just want to finish my l'oreal so I can invest in the hypnose one. Do you know of any dupes though since it's a little pricy?

    1. hahaha I love this comment! <3

Some say that the Maybelline The Falsies is the dupe for Lancome Hypnose, but I haven't compared them myself...
